Good post, 'tis a shame that the people who really oughtta read this lack the cranial capacity to actually... well... read.
I'll link any new warriors here, if I ever get back on GW...
btw, the skill icons need fixing :P

Its not the cranial ability its the thing that is protected by it lol...hahahaha. Anyway good points made by both Alex and Silverblade. Every warrior should read.

Yeah, good job. Although in the hammer build you suggested you might want to do it Forceful -> Feirce -> Heavy -> Crushing. As at the moment Fierce would not get used due to the adrenaline losing properties of Heavy.

I'm not too sharp on "now" builds but I would have thought that this hammer build would be a more common version.

[skill]Devastating Hammer[/skill][skill]Crushing Blow[/skill][skill]Fierce Blow[/skill][skill]Heavy Blow[/skill][skill]Flail[/skill][skill]Enraging Charge[/skill][skill]Healing Signet[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

heavy blow can be replaced by [skill]Hammer Bash[/skill] for less weakness reliance, and healing signet could be replaced by [skill]Lion's Comfort[/skill] if you perfer.

Great post Marty, and this should definitely be stickied.
It's a really valuable resource.

I disagree with a couple of points (or indeed ones that are conspicuous by their absence), but for what it tries to do (that is, educate newbies), it's fantastic.

My bugbears:
It's a shame Sentinel's is still so out of favour with the general GW populace.
As long as you hit 13 strength (or even 14; Enraging Charge has a 1 adrenaline bonus at 14), it's an unconditional armour bonus versus elemental damage.

The difference between a sword's deep wounding skills and those of axes and hammers needs to be stressed more. Deep wound is one of the most powerful tools in a warrior's arsenal, and people should note that not everything in GW bleeds. No bleeding means no deep wound from swords.

I'm not a massive fan of self heals. While using a self heal you're not attacking, and you're probably going to end up taking as much damage as you would have dealt out (let alone healed). You also have to split your attributes into 3 lines to get an effective self heal. Leave the heals to the back line.
But I'm aware that's a provocative statement and pretty much swims upstream against the flow of mainstream GW opinion

Also, I'd say that [skill=text]Mighty Blow[/skill], [skill=text]Counter blow[/skill], [skill=text]Earth shaker[/skill] and [skill=text]Backbreaker[/skill] need some lovin' in your hammer section. Counter Blow in particular is quite possibly the most important tool in a PvE hammer warrior's arsenal, as absolutely everything attacks.

A very nice post. Although i think you made a couple of errors, 1 mentioned my Leprechaun above.

I also think Heavy Blow should be mentioned in the Hammer skills section. As its 1 of the more useful knockdown skills in PvE as Forceful Blow and now Pulverizing Smash are good choices if you want to apply weakness.

It may be worth adding a bit of info on each Warrior elite (if you can be bothered of course, that is 1 hell of a post as it is) and whether or not they're a good choice for PvE, or at all.

You should also mention the PvE only skills too imo. "Save Yourselves" is a great addition to any Dragon Slash build, even at only 3 seconds, and can be maintained a reasonable amount using Triple Chop builds too, Whirling Attack is a great addition to pretty much any build. I would also recommend adding Epidemic to the /Mesmer list. I know its a little random, but if your taking agro then 1 deep wound spread to everything adjacent is never something to turn down if you have the spare slot.

I do, however, think your point about Lions Comfort is wrong. You state that it should only be run with very high Strength, but even with very high strength its heal is very poor. The best situation to use it is when your speccing reasonable amounts in both Strength and Tactics.

To the OP:
Excellent work.
Every now and then, someone should post something like this, with relevant information for those trying a warrior for the first time. Your thread is something I'll recommend to those new warriors I come across.....

Great guide for beginners, though you don't always have to stop what you're doing if you have SS on you, depending on the situation. (IMO)

Hey Marty!

Nice guide you put together here, great guide to point new players to!
I especially like how organized you were with it, so it isn't one big paragraph that would eat anyone up! lol.

1 small request, could you clarify about your DPS calculations? I am very curious as to the weapons used for the tests. As in, i would assume they all had their respective max damage, with your weapon attribute being @ 16, and each dmg bonus per weapon was the same as the other? You don't state what attribute level your weapon is being used at (assuming 16?), or the weapon types/bonuses that your calculations are based on (15^50, or not? Sundering, or not?). However small these details, they DO affect an accurate DPS calculation...so for curiosity's sake, and the OCD people like me, would you mind?

Just for reference::

It is therefore best to invest heavily in Axe Mastery to increase the likelihood of a critical hit and make use of the axe's high end damage. Based on the critical hit research, a max damage axe will produce more average damage per hit than a max damage sword at weapon mastery 11 or higher.
So their dps calculations also show us dph, which is similar to your damage calculations, yet again like you, they do not state the weapons/bonuses used for the tests, lol. Gawd i am such a nitpicker.

hehe, again tho, GREAT guide!
cheers!

Just pointing out a mistake in the armor example. The damage should be computed from a base armor rating of 60.

Thus,
100AL will reduce a 100 damage Fireball to 50.
80AL will only reduce a 100 damage Fireball to ~70.

Very good guide. Btw, my warrior just got Flail skill last night and it is the best IAS skill out there. I will use the Dragon build with him. Will use riposte and deadly riposte when farming certain areas. Great guide. Thank you.

Well, I'm glad you like it

Anyway, I know I made a few errors but I was in a bit of a rush to get this out (have a crapload of assignments to do so I wanted to avoid the rush). Now, it being the time in which I have to do these assignments, I won't be able to add fully new content such as elite discussion until next week when I get on holidays ! For the moment though, I'll be able to fix up little things that I overlooked while writing.

Sorry for the errors, there was alot to write .

Oh well, it's good stuff and I'll be keeping my eye on it and constantly updating

EDIT: Oh yeah, just forgot to say that in my rush to get this guide up and running I only included the first few skills that I thought of in my skills section. I'll properly review it when I have time. Thanks for the suggestions fo far (OMG I forgot Counter Blow...)

2.1
-There are other weapon damage type anomalies: the [wiki]Jitte[/wiki] deals Blunt damage, and the [wiki]Colossal Pick[/wiki] deals Piercing damage.
-Swords have about the same amount of Energy-using skills as the other two weapons.
-Like others have asked, where are the DPS numbers coming from? Axe has a greater DPS than sword over 11 weapon mastery due to crits. You can't really compare swords and axes if you ignore crits.

2.2
-Warriors should generally not be using "I have the power!"
-Where's Sundering?

2.3
-What about armor +10 bonuses?

2.4
-Armor does not affect +damage from attack skills, so your example using Galrath Slash is incorrect.
-Stonefist insignia should be mentioned.
-Warrior armor doesn't need minor Strength or Tactics if you aren't using the attributes.

3.1
-Sundering stacks with Strength.
-Strength is crap when you compare it to other primary attributes, but for what a warrior does it's okay.
-Typical attribute levels should be mentioned. At the very least, that weapon mastery is your first priority should be noted.
-Also worth a mention is how damage scales with weapon mastery attribute aka why 9 Swordsmanship equals crap damage.

3.2
-I don't see why a warrior should have a self-heal in PvE.
-Is there some reason a warrior would take cripslash over dslash? I'm not sure how cookie-cutter the other builds are either.
-16 Swordsmanship and Forceful Blow doesn't seem like a good idea.
-I don't see the usefulness of half the secondary skills listed.

The problem with Sentinel's is that it's build-specific - it's great if you have 13+ strength, but does nothing at all if you don't. It's good for a second or third set of armour if you have any builds at all that use such a high Strength, but if you have any variation at all you probably don't want to use it exclusively.

And going at 13 strength exactly means that elementalist mobs with Ebon Hawk or Enervating Charge get an unexpected benefit...

That's why I run 2 major runes instead of a minor strength and a superior weapon.
With 14 strength, I hit the breakpoint for Enraging Charge and I don't lose my Sentinel's bonus when affected by weakness.
